“Wellness Wednesdays” for WHS Students

Haadiya Meriam Al-Awady, Writer

We may be out of school officially, but it doesn’t mean you can’t reach out to our school’s amazing Social Workers. At Westside High School, student’s condition and health is always taken into consideration. With this in mind, did you know that every Wednesday at 12 PM, Westside’s Social Workers Ms. Lumpkins and Ms. McIntosh hold “Wellness Wednesdays?” “Wellness Wednesdays” is a virtual platform where students are welcome to join and discuss the topic: Strategies for Coping with Stress.

Considering that many students wanted something like this based on recent school surveys, your voices were heard! Our school’s Social Workers treat student’s health as a priority and know that times can get rough, especially during the COVID-19 crisis. So, a Zoom presentation was created where you can discuss the topic more in depth, talk one-on-one with the Social Workers, and receive extra details on how you can cope with your stress overall. In case you may not know, Zoom is a software where you can connect with people through group video chats, almost like Microsoft Teams.

Stress comes in many shapes and forms, affects children to adults, and can impact one’s health in various ways. Your health should always come first! In order to keep moving forward in life, you have to let loose and one way you can do that is to cope with your stress. During this Global Pandemic, it is understandable as to why we may feel stress, however, Ms. Lumpkins has an encouraging message for students, “Take accountability for your mental health in every way offered because you’re worth it.”
