Westside Uniform
February 5, 2016
In an effort to consolidate all the information in one location, Howler News has created a category specifically for all the uniform articles, quotes and comments. You will find it all in Uniforms.
We will keep our readers informed with up to date details. When we know, you will know.
Please make a special uniform to separate cadets from regular students and include special clothing options for cadets who participate in teams. Including a somewhat militaristic design for West Side uniforms for cadets will be swell! 😀
The current rumors surrounding dress code and future uniforms has been brought to my attention, and has influenced me to share my opinion. In the past few years, Westside students reportedly have had many problems with the prompted dress code and have been refraining from following it. The current rules implemented are very simple, but teenage rebellion is at an all-time high. To be honest, uniforms will not only improve academic performance, but will bring a sense of security in the school environment. As my geometry teacher, Mr. Schroeder has stated, “If students feel confident in what they are wearing, statistically, students do better.” The main concern and what causes the most outrage is the fact students believe that by implementing uniforms, it takes away from the creativity and forces them to be a certain way. Also, having uniforms eliminates the exhausting time it takes each day to fit the dress code requirements, but also shown your personality. Creativity can shine through the academic level, if uniforms are the dress code. The constant “interruptions” in class to address the students clothing prevents them from learning more. This mistake can be corrected, if uniforms are put into place. I strongly believe that uniforms should be enforced the next few school years.
From a fellow Westside student,
As a parent Im sadden that in this month of February while we celebrate Black History the parents and students of Westside have fallen victim to the same prejudice as my ancestors that faught and died for the right to vote , fairness, equality and equal liberties when it comes to the few teachers at Westside High School that want to mandate uniforms….The best way to try and get what you want is to scare people to with words like Safety and Security…But I’m sorry those days of us being too blind and ignorant to see through your smoke screen are long gone. If we are safe and secure than why are we paying H.I.S.D officers out of my tax dollars. When a student walks on the grass we say , “don’t trample on your schools lawn”, when a student paints on the wall we say,” don’t deface or destroy your school”,when a team of students acts in an inappropriate manner in the field of play we say , “you are making your s hool look bad”. So to me all these statements imply that Westside belongs to the students so they should have a voice and be heard. They the students should be allowed to decide if they wear uniforms. And futhermore the community i.e parents that pay taxes should never be left out. Because remember no taxes no salery no students no school no school NO JOBS..teachers that want uniforms.
Bruhhhhhhhh!!!!
Thank you Mr.Gregory. Finally an adult that understands us “younglings.”
Thank you. But what no one realizes is that the school administration is just getting more money from the students by implementing uniforms, which will most likely have to be brought from them. I feel their claim of it being a “safer” environment by requiring uniforms is false due to the fact that they come in, pretty much, all sizes. This means that anyone can put on a uniform to get inside the school. If a student cant afford some of the clothes a fellow scholar has, what difference will it make since the school charges just as much as a store in a shopping mall. It makes absolutely no sense.
Okay but honestly we come to school to learn not show off our clothing as if it is a fashion show why would it matter what we wear?
But not all people buy designer clothes to “show off” to their friends. If they do so, its what they choose to do. You can’t just change their mindset by creating a dress code. They will still find ways to “show off” what they have either it be their phones or backpacks. That’s how teens are and you can’t change how they are.
I agree with you 100%. I’m that student that likes to dress up nice, even with designer clothes, but It’s not because I’m trying to show off how rich and lucky I am. I wear it because it helps me stay productive the day. Personally for me, if I don’t wear makeup, do my hair, and dress up nicely, I always get lazy and just do whatever.
I have tried several times to have my opinion heard and raise awareness on account of uniforms and the students’ side on the subject, and frankly it seems as though little has been done. If we aren’t allowed to choose whether we want to pay for and wear uniforms every day, we should at least be able to decide what it looks like. Even though we’ve been given the opportunity to speak, it seems as though no one is really listening. The same uniform options remain the same, the school is still vague about the future regarding uniforms, and students are more outraged than ever. It seems like too much controversy and extra effort for a slight increase in OUTSIDE SECURITY, and doesn’t increase safety WITHIN our school. People will still carry guns and give threats, students will still be bullied, and now students will not behave/perform any better because their rights and privileges are slowly being taken away.
Preach !
i think if we get uniforms , we should have jeans , plaid skirts or skirts, and polo or westside shirts. By the way , the upperclassmen shouldnt have a major opinion because they are about to leave the school. freshmens have way more years in high school . but if we dont , thas good too because many kids come here for the freedom of wearing what we want.
Good day! Do you know if they make any plugins to safeguard against hackers? I’m kinda paranoid about losing everything I’ve worked hard on. Any recommendations? eddcfddedkgfcega
I personally like the plaid skirts and the white polo button down shirts(K-drama moment), but it doesn’t let me show off who I really am. Let me tell you about myself. I am that shy kid who doesn’t really like to express who I am verbally, but I like to show it through my fashion style. Uniforms would just makes me hide myself and that wouldn’t be good. I get that you want to protect us from outside danger, but it’s a lot worse inside the campus. You may not see it, but many kids are still getting bullied, they still drink and smoke weed, and etc. So please, do not take away free dress because it takes a lot of people’s voice, even if it just (clothing).
I don’t know who lied and said that uniform stops anything ,because it doesn’t! Just look at Lamar how dumb can someone be saying that wearing a uniform makes them smarter. I feel uncomfortable just by looking at them this is HIGH SCHOOL not something off of Disney Channel, we don’t care what each other wear, so please stop trying to get in the mind of a teenager .
It’s great, we should keep it!!!!!
