Homecoming has been a tradition at Westside since it was built in 2000. Homecoming is an annual tradition in the United States where high schools and colleges come together to celebrate alumni students and school spirit. It consists of activities such as sporting events and many have parades in some city or towns to come together and celebrate. Homecoming Spirit Week at Westside is usually towards the end of October and it consists of a week filled with fun and entertaining activities each day of the week for everyone to enjoy. Westside has had days such as “Twin Day” and “Jersey Day” for students and faculty to showcase their best efforts in school spirit.

Being that I’m a senior and it is my last homecoming, I wanted to ask students and faculty what the homecoming dress up days mean to them and their favorite ones.

Q: What do the homecoming dress up days mean to you and why?

Charles Joe-Wey(12) – “I think the more people that dress up and support, it shows their school spirit and pride in their school.”

Cristal Blanco(12)- “It shows you are proud of being a Westside wolf”.

Q: What has been your favorite homecoming dress up days?

Charles Joe Wey(12)- “Jersey Day has been my favorite because Texas and sports just go together”.

Cristal Blanco(12)- “Throwback day has been my favorite because you see people wearing different clothing and showing self-expression. It shows you their favorite era and how they connect with it”.

Q: Being a dean, you see thousands of students every day. What do dress up days mean to you seeing students dress up and why?

Ms. Ghosn-“It gives students to show school spirit and express creativity”.

Q: What has been your favorite dress up day and why?

Ms.Ghosn- “I like the throwback day because I love to see the different students and which era they love the best.”

It seems to me that everyone has their own favorite day whether its “jersey day” or “throwback day”. It’s great to see that students were having the best time with the activities but also showed their school spirit at the same time. Its important as a school that you have days like these where everybody can enjoy themselves and add a little bit of a creative touch to the environment in the classroom. Homecoming should be a time where people from all ages young or old should come together and enjoy the activities that makes every school great.
