I strongly believe that standardized testing should not base the majority of a student’s intelligence. Standardized tests like the SAT and ACT measure a high school student’s one common data point that can be used to compare all applicants. These tests create major stress of trying to memorize formulas, review difficut vocabulary and study every concept we have learned throughout out the years of being a student. It is very overwhelming knowing these tests determine our entire futures. Not only does it create stress, but it doesn’t consider external factors like test anxiety or our home life. Many students with test anxiety, including myself, can do amazing in homework, classwork, and quizzes, but tests causes us to think of the amount of pressure and impact it has on us. They also don’t show how much a student has grown over the course of the year. It determines a student’s entire intelligent from a single test, showing no progress of improvement or where we deteriorated. Standardized testing causes teachers to “teach the test” rather than giving students a deeper understanding behind the subject. Personally, the best way I learn topics is by relating them to something I know or experienced in my life. If we are just taught to memorize concepts, we will never really understand them in our own ways.
‘[I believe the best way of aiding students to learn subjects are to abolish standardized testing. These tests require a great amount of money and effort, in which should be used for different activities that students can connect or relate to. It is a way of spending money that will truly teach students to think ritically, anaylze information and to correlate to. The previous first lady, Michelle Obama states, ” If my future were determined just by my performance on a standardized test, I wouldn’t be here. I gurantee you that.”
