You may have noticed a recent upturn in rodents around Westside high school. From  making their way through the bleachers at basketball games in the lego gym to scurrying past audiences inside the black box, our rat problem has gotten severely out of control.

The infestation of rats has led to tightening rules. Food in the class is forbidden. No longer can food or drinks  be had at any point besides breakfast or lunch. Trash is only to be eaten inside the cafeteria/commons area and outside for more precautions. We took to the halls of Westside to find out the root of this issue and what’s being done to solve the problem.

A student account helped to paint the picture on this pest problem.

Have you seen a rat? Where?

Yes, I saw it in the band hall.

Was it a mouse or rat?

Mouse

Have you seen more than one?

No

Do you think the rat problem is being dealt with efficiently, I.E the lunch restrictions involving food and drink?

Probably, I mean we are very close to a huge park that’s full of rodents so the school shouldn’t be surprised that we are dealing with this problem.

Mrs. Mathis has encountered a serious rat problem inside her E1 physics class.

Did you see it? Where did you see it?

There were signs of a rat, I guess the short answer is yes.

Was it a mouse or rat?

I saw it and asked for help with rat traps. They brought a rat trap, the following Monday he was stuck on paper. On Monday the mouse was stuck to the paper who’d lost his fight in life.

Have you seen more than one?

I have not seen any more signs of mice.

Do you think the rats are being handled in an efficient matter, have you seen improvements in your classroom?

I do think it’s being efficiently handled. The plan they started has worked. I’ve always enforced the no food policy, there is a better effort across the building , there’s been better food control about no eating outside hallways, odd that there’s a mouse problem. I used to always see trays and remnants of food, now there isn’t as much but now we have mice.
